Topographic Maps
The best way to learn about topographic maps (maps that show elevation over an area) is to create one! Students brought in clay to school. First they attempted to make small mountains, then they would cut the mountains into multiple layers with dental floss! Students were exposed to opportunities to hand-create, draw, trace, measure, convert and calculate in different unit of measurements. Students learn essential skills through making mistakes and trying again. A true learning environment promotes risk takers and curiosity for life-long learning!
